... the other Black experience

Unapologetically Black: Black protest music is vital to the resistance

Musical excellence has always been a part of the black community's rich legacy of achievement and pro-black expression in the arts. This tradition best exemplified in the protest music that documented the struggles of their day and became soundtracks for the movement. Songs by artists like Nina Simone (“Mississippi Goddam”, “To Be Young, Gifted and Black”), The Staple Singers (“Freedom Highway), Curtis Mayfield ("Keep on Pushing", "People Get Ready" ), and Sam Cooke ("A Change is Gonna Come"). In honor of that legacy, The Apollo Theatre Presents: AFROPUNK’s ‘Unapologetically Black’: American Songbook Remixed is a very special evening that pays homage to black protest music and the contemporary artists continuing the tradition of proud, unapologetic, and uncompromising blackness. Musical Direction by Robert Glasper, with Igmar Thomas & The Revive Big Band and featuring Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Jill Scott, Bilal, Toshi Reagon, Staceyann Chin and surprise special guests! Grab tickets for ‘Unapologetically Black’, here.
