... the other Black experience

KKK's march to protest removal of Confederate statue was outnumbered by counter-protest

Charlottesville, VA. was fired up and ready to go over the weekend when throngs of protesters flooded the downtown area to resist the presence of supporters and members of Loyal White Knights of Ku Klux Klan. Escorted by police in riot gear, 30-50 Klansmen marched their hoods and Confederate flags through the streets to gather at Justice Park, but were met with boos and jeers from more than 1,000 counter-protesters who yelled, “Go home racists!” and while many carried “Black Lives Matter” signs and other signage that condemned the presence and ideologies of the KKK.

USA Today reports that the gathering of Klansmen was organized to protest “the ongoing cultural genocide...of white Americans.” It should be noted that this protest comes after the recent removal of a statue of Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee in a public park incited a similar gathering of white supremacists led by the punchable face of Richard Spencer.

Police used tear gas to disperse counter-protesters who blocked the Klan supports from exiting the park. They made 23 arrests (one person twice) and it’s not currently clear if these people were charged and, if so, for what. It’s also unclear which side of the protest the arrestees were affiliated with.
