FEATURE: Jaden Smith wears "womenswear" and opens up debate on gender norms

Jaden Smith has always been fashion forward; but the actor and musician now has the internet ablaze after he was spotted in what most consider women's attire last week. Positively, the outfit - and Jaden's Smith's penchant for "womenswear" in general - has opened up much needed dialogue about gender norms and the need for unisex fashion. See the outfit below.

You know shit has gotten real when the Afropunk admin comments on your point of view.

All I got to say is that at the end of the day, it isn't us who has to deal with the ramifications of wearing clothes different from our own. That's something Jaden is going to have to deal with. If it's to break gender roles, then (shrugs) If it is for any other reason,...(shrugs) He knows cameras will be snapped on him at every turn anyway, so I guess he could care less about what comes out of it. I have seen men wear women clothes (mostly, the women's panties) plenty of times.

Me? I'll just stick with clothes made for me.

For years the traditional dress in a lot of African tribes have been sarongs....so, what's the fuss?

I've been living in Japan for several months now and I think most Americans would be surprised by what they would find in the men's sections here. Most of what we consider masculine or feminine clothing is purely based on the culture we grew up in. Even parts of the world that have been heavily influenced by western culture will still have their own takes on fashion - variations in the cut, or tightness, or colours. There is no universal standard or norm.

@Fly Guy It is not free to do what he wants because it's a human being, it would be the same with anyone, the fact that he son of Smith does not count, I totally do not care, but it is true instead of talking to say nothing now I prefer to keep quiet and avoid such as those expressed in its place. Anyway we will never agree you have a totally regressive speech. Thank you for the debate.

A lot is being debated in the comments here and elsewhere about the photos and his fashion choices. That to me is not the issue.

Has anyone asked him the simple question of why he's dressing this way? Rather than assume why shouldn't we all hear from him?

As a woman of transgender experience I have no problem with people playing with gender or challenging gender norms. We are all human beings.

I would however have a problem if he were doing this simply for attention as some have alleged. I do not think any of us can say that he is unless he were interviewed about his fashion choices by someone well versed in issues of gender identity and who would be able to get a good idea of where his head is.

Someone like Janet Mock or Monica Roberts perhaps?

Too many trans people catch hell around the world on a daily basis for living their truth without the safety net Jaden apparently has.

If he's simply exploring who he is that's fine and we should all accept that. If he is using the idea of playing with gender as some sort of publicity driven move then that is almost as insulting as blackface to a person of trans experience.

What is a joke is this gibberish you're spouting. You're not making any sense here at all. All I keep reading in defense of this is the same excuse of him being a kid experimenting and that he can do what he wants because he's talented and so is his Family. As much as you people want to disagree with me collectively your points basically prove mines if that's the best you can do.

And to the person saying I don't know anything about Willy's 1st Son neither do you but you know what? He's not in the media for some stupid shit like this so that says alot about HIS upbringing in contrast to Willow and Jaden. We are living in the "Estrogeneration" where Boys and Men are behaving far more effeminate than they should and Girls and Women are acting in a hyperaggressive manner--that's not normal nor natural. That type of Role Reversal shifts the paradigm of Humanity and what our natural roles are. A young man wearing a dress doesn't do anything but make him look like a fool and a target for getting beat up by people and you same dummies will be on here blubbering about how wrong it is that he got jumped and blah blah blah (and before some of you come off all reactionary like you've been doing I'm NOT condoning that type of behavior, it's cowardly and foolish and brutish). Personally I'm for teaching young boys how to be MEN, not telling them that it's ok to wear clothes meant for a girl and to do what he wants.

Y'all need to get it together instead of buying into this stupid Propaganda by saying he's free to do what he wants because he's Will and Jada's kid and he's so talented.

Personally I think it is not a real skirt woman if they are people who dress in great fashion this must be a delusion, nothing to shake the world, he is free to do what he wants is people who go up as we head right now :D

Generally speaking people propaganda have not even the shadow of a track on a massive indoctrination that they escape because they are too smart end up in bad faith and it's a shame to end up s' take everyone because these arguments do not touch as they would like

Men dressing as women and vice versa is not new, what is new is the delirium of the theory of gender and super plot that goes with it. It is rather that the tragedy when people are not necessarily against it are idiots who adhere to propaganda, you you're shooting yourself in the foot alone, suddenly everything you said about the fact of being "disagree", falls into the water. Soon I expect it to be the fault of the Illuminatis -_- hahaha what a joke
