... the other Black experience

Body Positivity Was Lit AF at AFROPUNK 2016

Fashion is more than just what you decide to wear — it’s how you feel in the clothes — and skin — you’re in. Body positivity is about no longer viewing our bodies as “works in progress,” but as extensions of ourselves and the way we show up in the world. Wear Your Voice got a chance to speak with Kam Franklin from The Suffers at this year’s Afropunk Festival and ask her about what body positivity means to her. Here’s what she had to say:

“I’ve gotten flak for being a big girl and wearing tight shit. I’ve found that being comfortable makes other people feel uncomfortable. Being yourself with people who haven’t found their true selves makes them uncomfortable, and it’s not my job to help people find their own personal comfort. If I waste my time helping other people feel comfortable, I’ll never live my best life. Now I just do what I want.”
