New Footage From 'Black Girl In Suburbia' Documentary Surfaces

Hey guys, we mentioned the 'Black Girl In Suburbia' documentary-in-the-making to you before. Additional footage, a "sneak peek", has surfaced (scroll down to watch). In case you missed it, we're re-posting the trailer too.

'Dear White People' Satire Buzzing Like Crazy On The Internet

Ok now, this 'Dear White People' satire video is causing a commotion on the web. Writer/director/producer Justin Simien says: "Meant to articulate the sometimes funny, mostly harmless, but occasionally painful experience of being a Black face in a vastly white place (i.e. most Hollywood work environments) @DearWhitePeople also served an ulterior motive of mine. I'd been working for some time on a satire about race identity. The feature script for Dear White People follows the…

Edgy Or Ghetto? Is Race A Factor In People's Perception?

Are most Black girls with colored hair considered "ghetto" (in a negative way) while their white counterparts are considered edgy and cute? While it is true a lot of "ghetto" black females do like to color their hair is it such a pronounced thing that any other black woman who dyes their hair is grouped in with them.

Even if they are ghetto why should they be brought down for having dyed hair when so many people of other races are deemed so many positive things when they…

Not sure how to take this interview, funny or ignorant?

Okay, okay, okay.  We admit it.  We dish our fair share of ignorant content and commentary on Afropunk.com, from fucking off Santa at our Christmas party to our continuous support of our quirky Black witch blogger, but give us a break, gesh.  Did you happen to catch the punk at the end of afro?  And we feel like we make up for it by consistently delivering up-to-date… Continue

So, What are You Anyway? A Shot of Mixed Race

Samantha Isom considers herself mixed race. Her mom, white, and her father, black, Samantha had mixed friends growing up near a military base in South Jersey, where she said that most of the kids she knew were mixed. No one really claimed a race. After a while, things started to change. As she got older, she realized that mixed race people often felt the need to claim to just one race and often had issues in their lives that they choose to overlook. As a photographer, she…

Black , brown, or yellow-- are we all in the same box?

Black people come in a variety of skin colors, from dark brown to light brown — the key word here being “brown”. Yes. Despite the fact that we are called “black” our skin is actually brown. Even the darkest of “black” skin is an ebony tone. Similarly, our hair texture varies from the very tightly kinked to the very loosely…

The African-American Divide

“My entire life I had been told that I am African American, and here I was in Africa and had no culture to call my own… Is the history of slavery not enough explanation on how we separated from our homeland? That isn’t American history; it’s African and American history.”

Do Viral Ghetto News Clips Make Black People Look Bad?

Every year it seems there a news clip from some urban neighborhood with African Americans who maybe considered country, crazy, wacky silly or even stupid. Whether it be a leprechaun in the hood, whistle tip mufflers, a…

Dr. Laura’s Disease: Edgy White Person Syndrome

White people saying “nigger.” That’s always pleasant right? Saying “nigger” eleven times with head held high? Feels more like a massage. A really racist massage. In this week’s episode, follow comedian Elon James White's journey into the twisted, entitled mind of America’s favorite repressed, gay-bashing, antifeminist “radio therapist,” Dr. Laura. And what we find is a disease I like to call E.W.P.S., or Edgy White Person Syndrome. And even though Dr. Laura is already slinking…

What does it mean to “look African?"

I didn’t know I was African until I left Africa. A loaded statement coming from a Nigerian; an Igbo girl. Nonetheless, it is exactly the way I used to feel, before my family relocated back to the States from Nigeria. Before I left the confines of my father country, declaring me an African person was redundant- a statement of the obvious – so I never had to consciously think about it. In Nigeria, particularly in my Igbo culture, my father’s name and my education were the two…

Words from a Mixed Girl: Dating outside of your race, yes, get over it!

Flicking through the pages of Essence Magazines, April 2010 Issue, one thing happened to catch my eye. "The Wince," by Jill Scott. Now it wasn't I who read it but my older brother, Ryan, who happens to be mixed. Upon finishing the article, one thing my brother said was, "She's biased." Jill wants the equality that African Americans have searched for for over 400 years for… Continue

The Princess and The Frog, reinforcing stereotypes?

With The Princess and The Frog, it's the first time a Disney animated movie features a Black princess. Some scholars hail the movie as a milestone in national imagery while magazines such as the Italian Vogue draw a parallel with real life Princess of Liechtenstein Angela Brown (pictured below). But many argue that the movie actually… Continue

BET's sad attempt to clean up

Should we call the bullsh*t police on BET President Debra Lee, or give her credit for hosting an event seeking to improve Black women's image? The "Leading Women Defined" get-together sponsored by BET sounds good, but as Newsone puts it: "Maybe if BET stopped enthusiastically airing and promoting things like 'Frankie & Neffe' or the 'Tip Drill' video, these 'leadership talks' wouldn’t be necessary! But why would BET disrupt their profit margins and viewership numbers when… Continue
