Sound Check's Blog – March 2013 Archive (44)

Tecla's debut record blends so many genres the shortest way to describe it is this: Awesome. #SoundCheck

So I was starting to write about 'We Are The Lucky Ones', the debut album from Electro-funk/neo-soul/Afro-pop/glitch/RnB singer Tecla and my opening line was going to be about how the only genre she doesn't touch on is French Cabaret, and then I got to the stunning ballad “Moi” and that went pretty much out the window. This is a preposterously ambitious debut from a preposterously talented woman. Her sound melds the electronic and organic into a captivating cyborg. Synths burble…

Free Download! Rock Hard To American Fangs' new single “Pomona” + Fresh tour dates! #SoundCheck

The New York snow's melting, and spring's finally here. Celebrate with some new music from Houston, TX's American Fangs (unless you're in a polar/glacial region, in which case the snow melting is obviously a very very bad thing and we're all doomed). We featured the lyric video before, and they've made their new single “Pomona” available as a free download.

Free Download! Check out the mind-expanding “1% Static” from psychedelic prog rock band Galaxy of Tar's latest EP. #SoundCheck

The thing that differentiates good prog from bad is whether the complex poly-rhythms and spontaneous key changes feel necessary or like the band is just sort of showing off. Galaxy of Tar's songs may be complex, and certainly Elias Diaz V.'s musicianship is on full display, but on their latest EP Barretta, they earn every atonal guitar solo and sudden drum breakdown.…

Check out “Work It Out” from LA's Radiorelics. Bringing 70s sleaze and fun back to rock and roll. #SoundCheck

After the 20 year reign of hipsters, it can get hard to tell what's cool and what's not. Conventional wisdom is that Nirvana came and saved us all from the hair bands who committed the sin of being “uncool.” Now you can appreciate Van Halen ironically, but lord help you if you just straight up think their self-titled is a good record. (fun fact: it is.) Then along comes a band like Radiorelics who take all the sleaze and grime of Diamond Dave era Van Halen, add just a…

Free Download: Jazz/soul/hip-hop artist Rippy Austin's new EP “Patiently Waiting” is a hell of a ride. #SoundCheck

I was 14 when I heard “Rebirth of Cool vol. 4” for the first time. I had just finished digesting the complete canon of Classic Rock. Zeppelin didn't thrill me anymore. Aerosmith never really did. I was dipping my toes into indie and punk, but hadn't quite found my way into that world (we didn't have the internet yet. I distinctly remember getting into an argument with someone that summer in which I took the position that “punk can't be dead, because The Dead Kennedys!” Not…

1980's Punk / Trash band Malevolence are back after 20 years with new recordings! #SoundCheck

Here's the thing that's awesome about the internet. It's also the thing that's terrible and maybe overwhelming: everything is preserved forever. That band that existed for a hot second and played a handful of shows to a handful of people before disappearing or re-forming into a much more influential band? They still exist in some ethereal form. Somehow immortal even if largely forgotten. (I'm looking at you Inside Out, whose best song was a cheery ditty called “Rage Against the…
