Beef Aside, Thomas dishes post The Mars Volta

I wanted the beef on his split with The Mars Volta, but he wouldn't dish out. At the age of 27, Thomas Pridgen, is far classier than most musicians I've encountered over the last year, even with his split with the Grammy Award winning band, The Mars Volta, back in 2009.  For the last year, Thomas has been tediously working on his new music venture, The… Continue

Beautiful Black Women 2.0- Who's Measuring Your Beauty?

Beauty is one of those misnomers like the chicken and the egg.  What came first?  Were we born with our idea of beauty in our head and then shaped our lifestyle around who or what we find beautiful OR is it that we are born with no concept of beauty and those around us shape and form our ideas for us?  And if that's the case, in a society that has been dominated by white men, do other races ideals of beauty stand a chance of being considered beautiful in our subconscious…

Coming out of the closet for the holidays

In the holiday season, there are halls to be decked, presents to be bought (or made), carols to be sung and family to be dealt with. For many of us, it is that yearly trek that updates us on family and for some of us, reminds us why we don’t often stay in touch for the rest of the year. It could be the teen niece wants to dress like Nicki Minaj and throws a tantrum if you tell her to turn down her Usher. The deadbeat cousin that can always think of some get-rich-quick scam – I… Continue

African Websites Highlight Designers Across Continent

Ask the average person who some of the top designers in the fashion industry are and the names and locations will stream like clock work: Dolce & Gabbana, Ralph Lauren, Alexander McQueen, France, Italy, London.  In main stream marketing media, few cultures dominate the fashion world and the industry has been known for minority designers and models to crack and make…

Not all Muslim Punks Approve with Film About Taqwacores

Remember that film that was released recently about the Muslim punks called The Taqwacores (originally a book depicting a fictitious Islamic punk rock scene)?  Apparently, not all Muslims in the underground punk scene are feeling the film, especially not one band called…

I'm a Black Pagan, Would You Date Me?

Being Black and Pagan is already difficult, but to be Black, Pagan and wanting to date? That’s a multiplex issue in itself. The problems for Black Pagans that want to date stem from mostly religious and fairly racial grounds. Many people are still fairly ignorant about Paganism, witchcraft and Wicca and will believe that anyone who claims to be a Witch, Pagan or Wiccan…

Minnesota was just too lame for Coco & Breezy, 20-year-old fashion designers/ entrepreneurs, who released their eye wear collection 20/20 this year. After feeling like their fashion and style was a little too out of the box for their Minnesota counterparts, last year the sister duo packed up their bags, saved their money, and moved… Continue

If it bleeds, it leads...isn't that right?

We're all guilty of it. There is something in us that wants to pass along negative news that will illicit a response from our friends. Many people in the Afro-punk community voice that they are tired of the tainted stigma people of color seem to be casted with, but sometimes, do you feel as though we slip into the trap of guilty pleasures as well (sending the… Continue
