Support your own- What's the real deal?

We're a little confused. Not bitchin, just confused. Last week we posted a book giveaway contest from an Afro-punk member and blogger, Camille Collins, who recently released her own fiction book about a couple of kids living the "Afro-punk" experience. We asked readers to submit the name of their favorite book to escravapress@gmail.com for a chance to… Continue

If I'm a Witch, do I celebrate during the Holidays?!?

I try not to see the holidays as a stressful time, they should be cheerful and bright. If the holidays are too stressful, you’ve missed the meaning entirely. Since I’m Pagan and my family isn’t very aware of it, I have to work double time. Act Christian enough around my family and do Pagan stuff with my friends. I’m used to playing the part: remembering the Christian story of Christmas, Christmas songs, refresh my scripture knowledge and try to leave… Continue

Fuck this week revealed

Since the Afro-punk staff already submitted their fuck you fingers and who we're flipping off, we decided we won't anymore because then you'd hear about how pissed we actually are that we don't have enough money to have a festival in London and throw more parties and such. This week, some people in the community seem angry about things beyond our control and apparently out of their control, too. We were really feeling this one particular one about the… Continue

Blacks in technology, why do we OD?

The history of African culture is based on storytelling. So, is it any wonder that we've taken to our personal mobile devices like no other demographic has? African-Americans talk and use the mobile web more than any other demographic. (Need proof, according to Nielsen, African-Americans use the most voice… Continue

Dorm Room Diaries: I'd hook up with an Afro-punk

The Afro-punk hook up posts received some of the highest member feed-back of any submission we've posted on the site. That got us thinking...1) we should do something on Afro-punk to get people hooking up (we're working on it) and 2) we wanted to hear more personal stories from our members to see what their dating history has been. Luckily for us, our residential womanist… Continue

New Book Release and Giveaway-- FRIDAY DEADLINE!

Lia is 14. She is also one of a small handful of black kids in her San Diego suburb of Coronado. When her boyfriend disappears, Lia feels like she can only talk to Exene Cervenka, a punk rock high priestess and front woman of the legendary LA punk band X. Sound like a common theme on the AP message boards? Well, characters of Camille Collins newly released book,… Continue

Wtf, is that a Conspiracy Theorist on my Block?

I have learned in my experience that just like the over-skeptical and over-analytical, there's no arguing with a conspiracy theorist who believes the world is a puppet at the complete and total whim of a few old men in a secret club that conjures the devil and do all… Continue

Why Don’t Afro-Punks Hook-up??

This particular topic strikes a nerve, because it makes no sense at all. After my rant I hope you all have some answers because I am simply confused. Afro-punk’s (the documentary) main purpose was to expose issues that minorities face within a white washed scene and show each one of us within these scenes that we are not alone. A few years later the film has grown into an awesome community of die hard rock fans of color from all corners of the… Continue

When natural hair tells a different story

Natural hair is often tied to Africanness, and rightfully so. Just like our brown skin, we can trace our kinks, coils and curls to the motherland. But what if your hair tells a different story? I’m a black girl with freckles. They appeared on my face when I was six or seven and continued to multiply over the years. I remember once when a white friend of my mom came to visit. I put my skinny spotted wrist up to hers and said, “Look, we both have… Continue

NEGRO SKINS Nice Fucking Tattoos, Dudes

Trends in tattoos come and go. Ten years ago all the lesbians were getting Celtic knots on their arms. Now they're getting traditional sailor pieces to cover them up. All the punks used to have homemade Exploited tats. Now they're not happy until they've got an all-seeing-eye- within-a-tree- holding-a-dagger-that's- stabbing-a-scorpion-who's- reading-the-bible-upside -down-on-top-of-a -traditional-English-sixpence design. Whatever, dudes. One… Continue

An Oxymoron's Dream: The Black Skin Head

I have had the wonderful opportunity to interview Shaun McDaniel, a Black skinhead. Now, usually when people hear the term skinhead, the idea of an uber-racist Aryan Nazi-lover springs to mind and to hear of a Black skinhead appears very oxymoronic. Getting to hear McDaniel to tell his story definitely tell otherwise.

An Oxymoron's Dream: The Black Skin Head…

White Bands we Fuck With on Afropunk.com? We want to know.

Six long grueling summer weeks, one dedicated intern, hundreds of Afro-punk profiles selected at random, and the results are FINALLY in. We now have the top 50 bands that Afro-punk members put as their FAVORITE bands on their AP profiles. It's no surprise that Afro-punk legends, Bad Brains, claimed the number one listed band as a favorite, with Jimi Hendrix coming in with a close second, but it was also… Continue
