Spin - "The 8 Best Moments of Brooklyn's Afro-Punk Festival"

"Brooklyn's Afro-Punk Festival (...) aims to explore the nexus between hip-hop, punk, and urban black culture. It's the kind of place where folks of all shapes, sizes, and colors can be spotted with Metallica, Joy Division, and Green Day T-shirts. Bands like Living Colour and Fishbone are the festival's touchstones, and of course Bad Brains, D.C.'s legendary hardcore band, who, along with Mos Def, headlined the event's sixth annual installment."

Black superheroines

So there's been talk around about the Wonder Woman, Batgirl, Supergirl, etc. movies. That's all well and good, but what about movies where the female lead looks like me? Where are the comic/graphic novels cum movies featuring/starring black women? I'm still hot over the fact that they cast Jolie in the role of Fox in "Wanted". Uh... what? Come on, let's do a fun, silly, bad-ass film version of "Apocalipstix". Or an origin story of Storm, or Photon or someone? I really wish I could draw. I do…

Grandmere's Secret

Michelle, a slender, brown girl of 18 leaned against the magnolia tree watching them. The couple got out of their car: a white man around 35 with windswept short blond hair and his elegant wife also in her thirties with shoulder length black hair. They looked casually rich in their designer jeans that were…

D'Angelo Gives A Shout Out To Afro-punk!

In a recent interview (his first in nine years) with The Urban Daily, D'Angelo talks about what has inspired him lately, and gives a big shout out to Afro-punk! "I think it's the shit. I love it! (...) there’s a lot of folks, people in power, record executives or what have you, that are less willing to take chances on shit that might be different. But I think there’s a underground bubbling up under".

Ask the Bands Here- Your personal question may be answered!

As the line-up of bands keeps growing, we've been jotting down lots of questions to ask each band that we feel may answer some unnerving questions for the Afro-punk fans. We also have some questions that we would like answered, too. For example, The Cool Kids, (what the hell happened to the "When Fish Ride Bicycles" album) to 24-7 Spyz (does Jimi really like P Fluids new album?)

If you have any questions you would like to ask any of the performing bands, post…

Afro-punk Festival: Post Your Memories Here!

There are many images and characteristics associated with the rock scene. People may think of piercings, tattoos, crazy hairstyles and handmade clothing, but rarely do they include people of color in that image. It turns out that black Americans have had a strong history in the genre and still do today. The term “Afro-Punk” originally referred to these people of color (usually African Americans) who existed in the punk…
