With new film stills revealed and a trailer probably not far off either, the buzz around Quentin Tarantino’s highly anticipated ninth studio film Django Unchained is beginning to reach dizzying new heights of hyperbole. People are naturally excited because it’s Tarantino, the director responsible for such cult and mainstream hits as Pulp Fiction, Kill Bill Vols. 1 and 2, and most recently, Inglourious Basterds. But there are also some just as…Continue

I got into a discussion about race and class and a question was posed- in this society, are we enslaved mentally according to race and/or class? I took this to mean- does race and class dictate our "social mobility". Does it confine us in the social (and private!) spheres? Do we buy into these arbitrary confines and are we therefore mentally enslaved by them?
This blog was inspired by a recent event here at AP that I won't go into now, hopefully it's over and done with but that still remains to be seen. I offended an AP member with some jokes I made but promptly apoligized when she told me how she felt. A few days later I get a message from a friend of the AP member and she lays into me again about my comments and tells me that I really scared the hell out of the girl.
I try to look at things from all sides and having placed…Continue

This week, everyone seems to be buzzing about late rapper Tupac's "appearance" at Coachella as a hologram. Most people were just wowed by the surprise effect. But our acquaintance Kelly Virella (from Dominion of New York) shared quite a different point of view. She wrote: "I was a fan of his before he was killed and own a few of his CDs. (...) But Tupac also made music that epitomizes the worst of hip-hop, the gun-toting, gang-banging, woman-hating kind. I held my breath when I…Continue

In 2007, Traci Johnson, 41, founded Culture Skateboards with her husband Jay to support and promote young skateboarders from New York City. While teaching her nephew to skate, Johnson was astonished to hear young skaters talk about achieving fame and fortune as if that were the purpose of the sport. A lifelong skater, she decided to start an organization that would not only teach kids how to skate, but educate them about the history and culture of…Continue
Neo-Blues guitarist, Ayron Jones and his band The Way needs your votes. The Seattle group has been in world-wide battle of the bands since February of this year. The 19th Annual New York African Film Festival launched April 11 at Lincoln Center, and this year’s batch of movies are as inspiring as they are entertaining. In recent years, there has been more and more discussion about the plight of diasporic filmmakers and what to do about the lack of opportunity and representation that black people face in Hollywood. Luckily, the AFF this year is proving yet again that there are strides being made all over (take the…Continue
