Dorm Room Diaries: Schooling Fem Haters

So, what exactly is a feminist and why is there such a stigma that surrounds the word? In this edition of Dorm Room Diaries of a Fem Nerd, Twyla calls out "feminism haters" and pulls out her dictionary to give the official definition of a word, that she feels, is tossed around too loosely.

Grace Jones Puts London On Fire! - Show Review 4.26.2010

"Grace Jones played London’s Albert Hall last night, bringing to the stage an otherworldly extravaganza of costumes, and reminding us exactly who wears the conceptual-light-spectacular-flame-shooting pants on this Earth. She warmed up with a cyber ode to Metropolis with her first outfit, before easing into a piece that could have doubled as a gigantic floating water lily. Our favorite ensemble of the night was probably this ballooning clown onesie, although the billowing… Continue

Video: Justice - "Stress" by Romain Gavras

French director Romain Gavras (who's been in the spotlight lately for directing M.I.A.'s controversial "Born Free" video) worked with electronic duo Justice on the video for their track "Stress". The mini movie, which has been described as "gritty", "violent" and "disturbing" has caused quite a stir in France. Check it out for yourself below.

What are we eating?

As I sit in this whack cafe tryna snatch some free wifi and starving to death. I go and commit the ultimate sin...... I ordered an egg sandwich....Can someone tell me when they started substituting real eggs for the fake plastic thing I just attempted to consume. Even the bagel tasted like cardboard...When did food stop tasting like food. How did we let this happen??? When did High Fructose Corn Syrup become a main staple in our diet.. I guess its part of the 5 basic food…

Racism is so played

You know what really irks me? Discrimination and Racism. I feel that the term Race was created to divide humanity into categories.
We all have subliminal images and stereotypes of what certain
races are supposed to act like, or be like. thats sad because being human is having individuality, or the ability to be an act however we like. Now I'm not a christian, a muslim, or a Buddhist for that matter, but I am a very spiritual person; and it is in my beliefs that a creator or god…

Words from a Mixed Girl: Dating outside of your race, yes, get over it!

Flicking through the pages of Essence Magazines, April 2010 Issue, one thing happened to catch my eye. "The Wince," by Jill Scott. Now it wasn't I who read it but my older brother, Ryan, who happens to be mixed. Upon finishing the article, one thing my brother said was, "She's biased." Jill wants the equality that African Americans have searched for for over 400 years for… Continue

Magnetic North vs. Nautical South

worrying about the retail marketplace value of tomorrow is about as silly as wearing your most lavish winter sweater, whilst cooking in hell's kitchen in hithe of heat-wave weather. we've clear-cut more lush-lands and swallowed more oceans than five armies of angry nay-sayers making a king's court commotion. this is no such paper plead of "please save my earth" serotype sickness. this red and blue sphere will bask in sunshine long after the last body falls from the final bout of the "erase… Continue

Notre Dame's first Black valedictorian

Yes, summer time is rapidly approaching...which means several things-- the end of winter dry skin, time to lightly consider loosing a couple of nasty winter pounds, and ah yes, graduation! The tassels, the gowns, the chance to prove to people for once and for all, yes, punks can actually finish tasks we start. But what's more righteous and punk than being a smarty pants? That's why Afro-punk gives a hats off to Notre Dame's first Black valedictorian, Katie… Continue

Five Day Apocalypse

This was a group I decided to be in because of the powerful brudrens that played in it. Along with I have history with them as well. And also the new members that joined and made the sound become even greater. I an I Ras Spartacus also known as Lic-o-Yout Spartacus and Wolf aka Sir Jesse Blackneck were the main vocalist of the group FDA and set it off vocally. I have left the group and moved on but the songs that we did in the studio together and shows we did as a team will live on. So I am…

Spat out with your tatt out

Every year during the AFROPUNK summer festival, loads of really hot looking people dressed in enough body ink to fill Obama's calendar come through to enjoy our festivities. And we've seen it all, really, from the full sleeves of fuzzy art that turn out to be master pieces up close, to the random butt cheek tattoos that make cameos on drunken summer nights (yes, we've seen those,…
