Black Barbie: Appeal or Substance?

Over the years, Barbie has taken quite a change. Yester years vision of Barbie was a fun, beach running, blonde haired beauty whose only care in the world was what she was going to wear and how to accessorize herself. Today's image of Barbie shows us a rather different side of her; she's career driven, mother of two, married to her high school sweetheart.

Bad Rabbits Make a Joyful, Funk/Punk Noise

Bad Rabbits is a new band coming straight out of Boston with a very familiar sound. The group has been around for two years and if you miss (or remember) 80’s era Prince and Morris Day, then Bad Rabbits is just what the doctor ordered. The band combines 80’s funk/r&b with a rock attitude that can and will, literally jump out of your speakers.…

Dorm Room Diaries: The Woman's Bible

In this edition of Dorm Room Diaries of a Fem Nerd, Twyla gives a book review on, "The Woman's Bible," the first female-written theological study of women in the bible. Pulling out a quote from this 19th century book, she recaps a little on how women are viewed in The Good Book. But whoops, Twyla also accidentally leaves the camera rolling and we catch her when she thinks no one is listening! Darn that roommate and her food-thieving ways!…

A Review of our Monae at The Black Cat

It had been a year and a half since the last time I saw Janelle Monae live, and even for the tiny poetry club/café setting, you wouldn’t have known it from the show she put on. So I could only imagine what she had planned for The Black Cat, a concert venue in downtown DC. Of course I had to get in first, ‘cause dammit if that line outside the club wasn’t long as hell when I got there around 8:30 p.m. (doors “allegedly”…

Tie Me Up: A look at AP fashion over 30 years

What does an Afro-punk look like? Technically there’s no single answer to this question for punk style itself is a free for all, ranging from totally outrageous to simplistic. Hell, there isn’t even a solid definition of what an Afro-punk is either. However, there are a few slight differences in appearance that separate us from the stereotypical image of a rocker besides the most obvious: skin… Continue

Dorm Room Diaries: Fire Him Please!

In this edition of Dorm Room Diaries of a Fem Nerd, Twyla goes off on right-winged journalist, Erick Erickson, and explains why his anti-feminist views shouldn't be on the airwaves. Not only does Twyla give us our feminist update for the week, but she and her roommies let off some study jitters in an additional clip.

My Dirty Laundry: He Jack Rabbits?

Say, Afro Punk. It’s Dorian again. Since my last entry, a lot of things have happened in my life. I have moved out of New Orleans to pseudo-bumfuck Louisiana to a town called Lafayette. I have…shaved my head. I have also taken every last one of my Burlesque costumes and embellished them, which made me a slave to fringe, hot glue, and rhinestones for the past two weeks. I have sat and looked at the motherfuckin trees…because I know that about two months from now, I won’t see…

Ask a white girl, C'mon, do it

"Hey White Girl,

How do you feel about all of the controversy stirring around your blog on Afro-punk? Does it make you think black people are racist?" -HelloKitty26

I'll put it like this. The same conservative nukes who are attempting to slash my ego tires are the same screaming fans at a Nine Inch Nails concert and have 1,000 White friends on Facebook. Quite simply, Afro-punk asked me to do a column based on my views as a White girl...
is it okay to caps White… Continue

Sugar, Spice, and all things Spandex

Who wouldn't want to get their fancy tickled up by hot girls blowing bubbles and wearing spandex during a live performance? I recently came across Raye 6 after seeing her perform at an event in Brooklyn and became obsessed by the way she instantly seduced the audience-- 1) with her unapologetically flashy spandex outfit complemented with dancers (also wearing spandex) blowing bubbles around her, 2) this funky blonde and black fro-hawk, 3)…

Antidote for Ignorance: What happened Charley?

Well….it looks like Black politicians have found themselves in the middle of a negative media blitz over the past two weeks. We all know the media, whoever that phantom is, is constantly using scandal to move papers/magazines,… Continue

Vernon Reid speaks on Jimi Hendrix Tour Experience 2010

There is no doubt that Jimi Hendrix is an Afro-punk icon, spawning the cultural movement of black people hitting mainstream success on the rock scene. Celebrating his legacy, the Experience Hendrix Tour is back for its 2010 nationwide tour, which kicked off in LA on March 2nd. More than ten bands are traveling across the U.S. to play a selection of Hendrix's greatest hits, including one of Afro-punk's favorites,… Continue

Bad Religion are as responsible as anyone for the homogenization of punk rock. Sometime around 1990's Against The Grain, it sounds like they decided they'd already reached perfection, so why bother trying to do anything new anymore?

Here's how Bad Religion songs go: verse where introduces an idea, fist-raising chorus with anthemic oozin… Continue

Fishbone's Frontman, Angelo Moore, Dishes Out

It was something of an unplanned adventure, meeting up with Fishbone's lead singer and frontman, Angelo Moore. The interview begins around four in the afternoon, as a wired up and full of smiles Angelo, immediately swoops me into his armpits for a hug upon my arrival. Currently on a U.S. tour with The English Beats and The Outlaws, Angelo invites me up to the tour bus parked outside of The Irving Plaza in New York.

Getting a little edgy, this week in Dorm Room Diaries of a Fem Nerd, Twyla goes topless to promote the book, Full Frontal Feminism. While promoting the book, Twyla exposes her views on the inequalities of women versus men, gives stats of women in the work force, and encourages Afro-punkers to do their homework. My Dirty Laundry: Would've Been Nice To Get Laid

What's up Afro Punk. I'm Dorian. Coming at you from the Deep, dark, damp recesses of the Dirty South in the fucking Bayou. New Orleans, Louisiana. Everyone thinks that New Orleans is the land of sinful opportunity, where people walk around, dicks whipped out with hats on ready and rarin' to fuck.

Ladies in heat, swingin' from the balconies, titties…
